Educational Foundation
ASA's Educational Foundation (ASAEF) is a separate, nonprofit corporation established by ASA and chartered in 1967. The mission of the ASAEF is to carry on educational, research and charitable activities related to the advancement of the appraisal profession. ASAEF is exempt from income tax as a 501(c)3 organization, thus, contributions are deductible as charitable contributions.
The foundation is managed by a board of directors, four of whom serve as officers. The directors are appointed by ASA's Board of Governors, who sit as trustees of the foundation but have no other legal connection with ASAEF, which manages its affairs independently of ASA.
The foundation is supported by contributions, revenue from the ASAEF annual live and silent auctions held during the annual international educational conferences, royalties from the sale of "Appraisal Principles And Procedures" by Henry A. Babcock and the ASA MBNA credit card royalties.
Applications for educational grants submitted relevant to ASA courses, continuing appraisal education, college/university-level appraisal-oriented courses and books relevant to professional appraising are within the areas considered by the foundation. The foundation awards grants of $250 each to individuals attaining a master's degree in valuation sciences. In order to qualify, the graduate must present his/her thesis to ASA for inclusion in ASA's International Library Center.
Educational grants are awarded through a process of written application and reviewed by all ASAEF directors prior to acceptance or nonacceptance of application. Inasmuch as ASA is a multidiscipline professional appraisal society, applications relevant to all disciplines are given equal consideration. It is not necessary to be a member of ASA to apply for an educational grant. Educational grants cover tuition and book fees but not travel or lodging.
